We are planning to erect a plaque in Smithfield this summer to honour local man Bob Doyle. On Saturday 13th April at 8.30pm we are holding a table quiz in The Cobblestone, Smithfield to raise funds for this initiative. It is €20 for a table of four and promises to be a great night with lots of prizes and a raffle. Hope you can make it along.

Bob Doyle was born in 1916 in a tenement on Linenhall Street (off North King Street). He joined the IRA in the 1930s during the Dublin street battles with the fascist Blueshirts. In 1937 he went to fight in defence of democracy and against fascism in the Spanish Civil War. He was captured by fascists during the Battle of Belchite in 1938 and interned in Burgos concentration camp where he was brutally tortured by fascist guards. He was released in 1939 and spent the remainder of his long life fighting for progressive causes in the workplace and community. He died in 2009 aged 92.
